Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest standing masonry fort in the United States. Built by the Spanish nearly 450 years ago to protect the valuable Atlantic Trade Route, this fort still stands today, an amazingly well-preserved monument to America's diverse and fascinating past.
Visitors are encouraged to explore the fort at their leisure, interacting with reenactors in period costumes, or asking the park rangers questions. There are also special presentations, reenactments, and tours scheduled throughout the day.
Young people can complete the Junior Ranger Program to earn a special badge as they learn about the history of the fort and the era in which it was built and operated.
